Rough Ridge Trail
This has to be one of the best if not the best hike on the parkway. There are three distinct overlooks along the trail with views of the mountains and valleys as you walk along. You start out at the base of a waterfall and then cross over the falls as you begin your ascent to what feels like the highest most open peak on the parkway.
The trail is not too difficult, however, you want to be careful because it is not a smooth walkway. It feels, as it should, like you are walking through the forest. There are ruts, roots, mud, uneven terrain and in the fall and winter, ice and snow. There are places to rest at the overlooks.
In the fall there is a rich tapestry of colors but you will want to go earlier that you may think. It gets cold quick at this altitude and the leaves will turn and fall before you know it.
