Stone Mountain State Park
Stone Mountain State park is a wonderful place to visit. As a change, from most parks on or near the Blue Ridge Parkway, this is 14,000 acres of park surrounding a gigantic smooth river stone. No matter what your family enjoys, there is something here for everyone.
For history lovers, there is a museum in the ranger station. They have displays of tools, picture and clothing of the early settlers. Also, in the shadow of Stone Mountain, there is the Hutchinson Homestead. As well preserved Homestead, visitors are encouraged look through the home and walk the grounds and admire the garden and barns.
Hikers have 16 miles of trails ranging from easy to difficult. One trail ends with stairs climbing the side of a 200 foot waterfall. There are beautiful views from almost every part of trails of either Stone Mountain or of the surrounding mountains. If you are at the peak, and feel that you are standing in a cloud, don’t worry, just give it a little time and the cloud will pass, opening up gorgeous unobstructed views.
If fishing is your thing, there are more miles of streams and river than there are hiking trails.
Climbers are allowed to scale the rock face, in certain areas. If you are an inexperienced climber it is recommended that you have an experienced partner accompany you.
You don’t have to leave when the sun sets. You can stay the night and get an early start on the fun, the next morning by staying in one of the 90 tent and RV camp sites.
