Carvers Gap
If you like wide open spaces and 360 degree views, then Carvers Gap is the place to visit. Carvers Gap sits on the North Carolina, Tennessee border off of Highway 143, coming from Tennessee, and Highway 261, coming from North Carolina. There is a parking area when you reach the top of the mountain. On one side of the parking area sits Roan Mountain State Park, and on the other, Roan Mountain Bald and Roan High Bluff.
The parking area is a decent size but still not nearly enough, in the Fall. You may have to park on the side of the road. It may be less congested if the Park is open.
If you are like us and the State Park is closed, don’t worry. The Appalachian Trail follows the top Roan Mountain Bald and Roan High Bluff. There are spectacular views from these two points. The trail rises gradually and is well maintained. If you want to bring a lunch there is plenty of space to sit in the grass and enjoy the views. The kids really enjoyed being out of the car and having a place to run play. I only saw one garbage can, on the trail to Roan High Bluff, so be sure to bring something to store your garbage.
There is a restroom but it is primitive. In other words, it’s an outhouse with no toilet paper.
I would recommend Carvers Gap for anyone but especially if you have children. This is one of the best views without having to hike a trail with a 45 degree rise, for miles. The reward is quick and there is room to let young ones burn off some energy.
