Jackson County Public Library
If you don’t think that a library is a great place to visit while on vacation, you need to visit the Jackson County Library, in Sylva NC. Originally, the courthouse where the library is located, was originally the home of the county seat. This beautiful building was built in in 1914 by industrialist C.J. Harris. It served as county seat until 1994 and then was remodeled around 2011. Now this historic building is the home of the Jackson Library, Genealogical Society, Historical Association and the Arts Council.
We enjoyed exploring the building. It was like visiting a museum that has beautiful views out of every window. Inside you will find a pictorial history of the Jackson County courthouses, art and crafts from local artisans, and best of all, the wonderful architecture. As you explore the old courthouse you can take a break and play chess, look at the sculptures or sit in a rocking chair and enjoy the beautiful mountains or view overlooking Sylva.
The courthouse sits majestically atop the hill at the end of Main Street Sylva. There are great photo opportunities as you climb the steps to the original, main entrance. If you cannot climb the steps, there is a street that will take you to the main entrance on the side.
The library opens at 10:00 am, Monday - Saturday, and closed on Sunday however some areas of the main courthouse do not open until 12:00 pm.
