Mount Airy
Mount Airy is one of my favorites. Not only is it the home of Andy Griffith, it is a nice friendly town with plenty to do. When you step onto Main Street you see what the town looked like decades ago. There are shops, but you will also find other working businesses such as Floyd’s Barbershop and the Snappy Lunch restaurant, which you may remember from the Andy Griffith show. If you are a fan of Andy Griffith there is a terrific museum dedicated to his life and show. You can see the house he lived in, though I’m not so sure how much the people who live there enjoy that. After you finish looking around town you will find the North Carolina Granite Corporation’s world’s largest open-face granite quarry just outside of town and less than an hour from Stone Mountain, Mabry Mill and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
This area is beautiful year round but it is especially beautiful during the fall. They have many events during the year such as a Tri-Mayberry Sprint Triathlon, Blue Ridge and Beyond Concert Series, Annual Autumn Leaves Festival and Mayberry Days.
