Stone Mountain Summit Trail
The Stone Mountain Summit trail is a wide, well maintained, trail that leads to the top of Stone Mountain. As you ascend you will come openings in the trail that allow you to get a glimpse of the view you will enjoy at the top. Once you reach the peak you will be greeted with a gradual sloping granite surface that seems to be hundreds of feet wide and deep as it drops to the face of the mountain. From here you can see for miles.
If it is raining or foggy when you reach the top, give it some time. Usually it is just a passing cloud. The day we visited there were people who were disappointed and left. Just a few minutes later the cloud and rain past and we enjoyed a spectacular view.
There is room to walk around and see the view from different directions, however, the surface gradually slopes to the face so use common sense and don’t walk too far out. The trail continues around the back of the granite surface and down the side. There is a cable to hold to as you continue to the base of the mountain. The trail does become more difficult as you descend so, if you are unable, you may want to drive to the Hutchinson Homestead parking area to view the mountain from the base.
